Wow, after already being a month into this new year, maybe work has (already) taken up most of your time and energy, and you’re slowly starting to feel stressed again. Maybe you’re also questioning your goals and intentions you have set for this year, because you realized they may have been too big, too irrelevant (because you could literally replace it with any other goal and feel equally uninspired), or too unspecific.
First off, I want you to know that you’re doing great and you haven’t failed at anything and are also not failing yourself. You are learning and we are here to grow and experience life over and over again. So instead of failing, it may simply be that you fell back into old habits, old ways of doing things, because you’re so familiar in those routines that creating new ones can take a bit more effort at times than we would wish.
There is one key thing that I found really helps us achieve our goals with much more ease and flow instead of pressure and stress.
The no. 1 thing to get back on track with your goals: Accountability
Now that we have the self-judgment out of the way, let’s focus on what you can do to get back into a motivated, excited, and forward-moving spirit with your goals!
A recent study that we looked at (soulsalt.com) showed two incredibly interesting and important keys to following through with what you desire for your life (yes, this especially includes you if you consider yourself a procrastinator, a perfectionist, or people pleaser!):
#1: Committing to someone else that you are going to accomplish a certain goal increases the chances of meeting that goal by 65%!
#2: If you have a specific accountability appointment to check in on the status of your progress, the probability of meeting your goal increases by 95%
Take these two simple steps to finally follow through with your health and life goals this year (and not procrastinate)
Based on the above results from the study, this is what I suggest you do right now (or within the next seven days), if you are serious about leaving perfectionism behind and creating a beautiful, glowing life where you radically put yourself before work and others:
1 - Share your goal with someone you love
The study clearly shows that once we express our desire and commitment to another person, we are 65% more likely to achieve it. This means that your goal shouldn’t just be an idea or an imagination in your mind, or even an action plan on a piece of paper. You actually have to express it vocally to another human being.
There is something powerful about using your voice. You start to speak your desire into existence. It becomes real.
Who are you going to talk to about your goals for this year? Text them right now and let them know you need to discuss something with them, then schedule a time to either meet up with them personally or talk on the phone or on FaceTime within the next few days.
2 - Schedule accountability appointments
When we have others who hold us accountable for what we said we would do, we are more likely to actually do it. In fact, the study says we are 95% more likely to achieve it. It’s great to have an accountability buddy throughout the year who helps you reflect, talk through struggles, and celebrate your wins along the way.
And that’s also why group coaching programs can be so helpful for putting yourself first this year, because the accountability piece of being part of a group can be really motivating and actually get you to a point where you take proactive steps forward without having to “push” or “force” yourself.
My recommendation is that you schedule in a few checkins throughout the year with the person you shared your goals with, or find someone who would love to do this with you. Ideally someone who is also into this whole „living a healthier life this year“ kind of vibe and who loves visions and goals just like you do! :)
