Valentine’s Day: the day of love and making presents? For years now, this day has mainly become a commercial event. Our society has reached a point where this day has often become more special for relationships than all other moments throughout the year.
Have you ever felt that you took your most important people for granted? Yes, they’re always there. But you never know for how long. Every day, there are plenty of reasons to tell someone how much we love or care about them. It is never too late, if you start now and show love and appreciation from the bottom of your heart.
In our hectic daily lives, we still do think about or loved ones, but tend to forget ourselves. These 5 tips will help you get closer to yourself again:
1. I love myself.
Take a piece of paper or a notebook right now and write down 5 things that you like about yourself. Your talents, your body, your characteristics… Whatever pops up in your mind. It will probably feel a bit weird, because we learned to constantly criticize ourselves and be tough. But if you keep doing this exercise for a few days, you will see that it will become easier and easier, and every day, you will find more things about yourself that are amazing!
2. I am successful.
In the evening, write down 5 things you did successfully today. It doesn’t have to be anything life-changing like getting a good grade in an exam or getting a new job. Just think about small things that has made today a successful day for you.
3. Reflect.
When was the last time you did something good for you? When was the last time you thought you “deserved” something? Now I’m not talking about frustration shopping or eating chocolate after eating healthy for a while. I’m thinking more about a gift that you made for yourself. My favorite gift is the gift of time. Maybe you booked a massage or went out to your favorite restaurant. Schedule a gift for yourself within the next 7 days.
4. I have time.
Probably THE most popular excuse nowadays: “I don’t have time!”. Taking time just for yourself is at least as important as good sleep, healthy food and physical activity. It’s only when you combine all of these elements that you can be balanced. Next time you find yourself saying “I don’t have time”, ask yourself why. Maybe it’s not your priority right now – and that’s fine. But possibly, there are some more honest answers to that, too. When there’s something that matters to you, do take the time for it. YOU should be the one having control over your time, time shouldn’t be controlling you.
5. I feel comfortable.
…in my own skin. Of course, skin care and makeup are part of this, too, but also the clothes that you wear and the life and people around us. If you had to judge yourself: How comfortable do you feel on a scale from 1 to 10? And then think about what you can change, and start right now.
Have a happy Valentine’s day!
