3 Important Differences between Coaching and Therapy

Whether you're going through a hard time right now, or simply want to glow up some areas of your life (e.g. feel more energized, find more fulfillment in your job, make time for yourself to reflect on bigger picture things etc.), you may be asking yourself:

Can a coach or a therapist help me better?

I've been a certified Holistic Health Coach since 2017, and I find one of the hardest things for people is to really understand what exactly coaching is. Health Coaching is often confused with therapy, fitness training, nutritionists, etc. It's none of that.

Coaching vs. Therapy: Are they the same?

Therapy and coaching may seem to be similar, and they are in some ways (growth and living your best life are ideal outcomes for both), but there are also differences that you need to know before deciding on which one is best for you - or maybe it's both?

THE TOP 3 DIFFERENCES

Here are the top three differences you should consider when deciding if you should hire a therapist or invest in a coach:

Difference #1:

Therapy/counseling are past-focused, while coaching is future-focused. If you desire to resolve something from your past, heal traumas, close chapters, counseling might be a better fit. Just want to work towards new goals and visions and become a healthier version of you? Coaching is perfect for that.

Difference #2:

Therapy/counseling is a top-down model where the therapist is the expert. A therapist knows a lot about the processes, strategies, tools, and the nature of the human mind and body to help the client heal and move forward. Coaching is a more collaborative relationship between client and coach, where the client is the expert on herself, and the coach helps the client trust herself (again) to find her own answers.

Difference #3:

Therapy is focused on fixing a problem. There are things that need healing and closure that are very important for us in order to move forward in life. While therapy can also include learning and self-development, coaching specifically focuses on lasting habit change through getting to know yourself better.

WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU?

While therapy and coaching are both great, it's really important to understand where you are and which journey would be most beneficial for you right now.

As a Holistic Health Coach, it is my job to help you strengthen your intuition, identify your core values, set and achieve your (glow life and health) goals, hold you accountable for your progress, and celebrate your wins.

Disclaimer: Coaching is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or any other mental challenges, always seek the guidance of your doctor or other qualified health professional with any questions you may have regarding your health or a medical condition. Coaching is not the same as and does not replace therapy, however, it can be a great add-on to therapy.
