Life coaching can be a pivotal experience in helping some people focus their energy and shape their life towards their goals. Some life coaches will focus on a specific area of expertise, such as career development or improvement in your personal relationships, but all of them share a few common traits: goal-setting, accountability, and looking to the future.
As life coaches rely on you to engage with their sessions, you’ll need to be sure that this is something that you want to do for yourself, rather than being forced into it, or doing it half-heartedly. This way, you can be sure that you’re getting the most out of your coaching time, and can move forward with confidence and clarity.
Let’s take a look at some of the things you’ll need to do in order to get the most out of life coaching sessions:
Be prepared
Life coaching can be extremely rewarding, but it works best when you come prepared. Doing so allows your coach to see what’s important to you, and in the time capacity of your session, work with you to set some goals and a plan of action.
Before having your first session, take some time to think about what it is you want to get out of the experience. Are you looking to be more confident? Set better boundaries? Do you have a big dream, like setting up your own business, but lack the self belief to move your plans forward?
By taking the time to put this initial work in, your sessions will be more valuable. Create and nurture an active vision for your future self, whether that’s through a vision board or notes. Just remember to come back to your goals in order to keep yourself on track.
Choose the right coach for you
The key to a successful professional relationship with your coach is trust and rapport. You’re going to be sharing your hopes, dreams, and challenges with this person, so you need to make sure that you trust them and feel comfortable that they understand the direction that you want your life to take. The right coach might challenge you, but they’ll always have your interests at heart.
In order to find the right balance, look at online reviews, and book a few appointments, or contact several different life coaches (if you’re based in the US). You can then get a gauge of whether or not you feel that they will be the best person to help you.
Be open
Your coach isn’t always going to keep it easy for you. You’ve got to be ready to put in the work and be open to your future self. Perhaps there’s an area of your life that you know deep down is holding you back, but you’re reluctant to address it, or you’re in denial about how it’s affecting you.
In order to truly expand your mind and reach your full potential, you need to be open to discussing and working with uncomfortable or difficult thoughts. You also need to be open to trying new ideas that you might not have considered, or have been reluctant to give time to in the past. True growth comes from expanding your mindset.
